  16. <p>    OUR COUNTRY'S GOOD. The acerbic antimilitary play, named
  17. London's best last season, gets double exposure: the original Royal
  18. Court version is at the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto, while
  19. the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles offers a U.S. premiere.

  21. <p>    AUGUST SNOW. Revered novelist Reynolds Price debuts a trilogy
  22. at the Cleveland Play House (titles of the other works: Night Dance
  23. and Better Days).

  25. <p>MOVIES
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    DRUGSTORE COWBOY. Matt Dillon and friends go on a drug spree
  28. in Gus Van Sant's eye-catching tour of the lower depths. Dillon,
  29. a punk Montgomery Clift, is pure Acapulco gold as a smart addict
  30. who gets scared straight.

  32. <p>    JOHNNY HANDSOME (Mickey Rourke) has the face of the Elephant
  33. Man and the brain of a perverse computer. Now all he needs to take
  34. his revenge on some suave double-crossers is a little plastic
  35. surgery. Walter Hill's thriller boasts a sturdy cast (Ellen Barkin,
  36. Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth McGovern) and a ripe sense of criminal
  37. ambiguity. Neat work!
  38. </p>
  39. <p>    BLACK RAIN. Michael Douglas glowers through this formulaic cop
  40. drama set in Japan. Director Ridley Scott can make anything -- a
  41. nightclub, a chase, a murder -- look sexy. But here he wastes his
  42. time -- and ours.

  44. <p>MUSIC
  45. </p>
  46. <p>    BORIS GREBENSHIKOV: RADIO SILENCE (Columbia). The title is a
  47. self-fulfilling prophecy. Grebenshikov, a dubious product of
  48. glasnost, sounds like David Bowie on Bosco as he thrashes his way
  49. -- in English -- through twelve pompous rock anthems as dense as
  50. the Iron Curtain but not quite so penetrable.

  52. <p>    JAMES MCMURTRY: TOO LONG IN THE WASTELAND (Columbia). A fine
  53. debut album that fixes a bleary, jaundiced eye on the back roads
  54. and byways of small-town life. McMurtry turns a lyric with irony
  55. and precision, even if his voice can't carry a tune as far as the
  56. barn door.

  58. <p>    BEETHOVEN: AN DIE FERNE GELIEBTE/BRAHMS: VIER ERNSTE GESAENGE
  59. (Deutsche Grammophon). Tenors, sopranos, basses, mezzos: eat your
  60. hearts out! The best classical singer since World War II is
  61. baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who proves it on this dazzling
  62. lieder collection.

  64. <p>TELEVISION
  65. </p>
  66. <p>    COMMON THREADS: STORIES FROM THE QUILT (HBO, Oct. 15, 18, 21,
  67. 24). Friends and family of five AIDS victims, whose lives are
  68. commemorated in the AIDS Memorial Quilt, reminisce poignantly in
  69. a documentary directed by Rob Epstein (The Times of Harvey Milk)
  70. and Jeffrey Friedman.

  72. <p>    DO YOU KNOW THE MUFFIN MAN? (CBS, Oct. 22, 9 p.m. EDT). John
  73. Shea and Pam Dawber play the parents of a boy who has been abused
  74. at the friendly neighborhood day-care center.
  75. </p>
  76. <p>    NIGHT MUSIC (NBC, Mondays, 12:15 a.m. EDT). Assemble a handful
  77. of the best jazz, R.-and-B. and rock artists, and turn them loose
  78. in a weekly, hour-long musical showcase that has smooth-talking
  79. alto saxman David Sanborn as host. Result: the best damn music show
  80. on television. Look for Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and Taj Mahal to
  81. perform this season.

  83. <p>BOOKS
  84. </p>
  85. <p>    SOME CAN WHISTLE by Larry McMurtry (Simon & Schuster; $19.95).
  86. Some of McMurtry's good books, like Terms of Endearment, have been
  87. turned into good movies. Alas, this novel, about a feckless
  88. millionaire TV writer discovering his daughter from a long-ago
  89. marriage, is not a good book. Wait for the inevitable screen
  90. adaptation.

  92. <p>    A PLACE FOR US by Nicholas Gage (Houghton Mifflin; $19.95).
  93. The author scored six years ago with Eleni, the story of his
  94. mother's heroic sacrifice in smuggling her children away from
  95. Communist insurgents in Greece during the 1940s. This time, Gage
  96. focuses on his father, who had preceded his family to America to
  97. try to find a better life for them all. Instead he welcomed ashore
  98. four motherless children and earned this touching, textured memoir
  99. from one of them.

  101. <p>ART
  102. </p>
  103. <p>    VELAZQUEZ, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. If you
  104. want to know what realist painting is or can be, look at Velazquez.
  105. Artists have said so for 300 years. Here, in 38 choice canvases,
  106. is the reason why. Through Jan. 7.
  107. </p>
  108. <p>TASTES
  109. </p>
  110. <p>    California has long had Chardonnays to match the white wines
  111. of Burgundy and Cabernets to challenge the reds of Bordeaux. Now
  112. it has a brandy that compares, worthily, with the great grape
  113. distillates of Cognac. It is Germain-Robin, named for French
  114. expatriate Hubert Germain-Robin, who has been producing it in
  115. minute quantities in Mendocino County since 1981. Lot 6, now on the
  116. market, is feather-touch brandy -- smooth, light and spicy, more
  117. akin to a Cognac by Delamain or a small producer like R. Ragnaud
  118. than to the mass-market offerings of Remy Martin and Hennessy. Next
  119. year Germain-Robin and partner Ansley Coale Jr. will start selling
  120. their first equivalent of a Cognac X.O., a satiny-textured beauty
  121. with seven years in cask. The price tag, alas, will be strictly
  122. Faubourg-St.-Honore: about $65 retail.
